Nederlandse Publieke Omroep, also known as NPO, Dutch Public Broadcaster, Dutch Foundation for Public Broadcasting, and Stichting Nederlandse Publieke Omroep, is a State Owned entity headquartered in the Netherlands. Founded in 1969, the organization employs approximately 1390 individuals and reported $1.2B in revenue as of 2024. Functioning as a tier 1 media tech buyer, the company specializes in broadcast television and radio. It administers public broadcasting services in the Netherlands and is the owner of the radio-spectrum licence and public DVB-T and DAB+ frequencies.
On August 25, 2026, Avrotros, a public service broadcaster under the Nederlandse Publieke Omroep (NPO), announced its withdrawal from the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest, stating the event "can no longer be considered neutral" due to a participating country's involvement in a large-scale military conflict. This development followed an earlier statement on August 24, where AvroTros indicated it would boycott the 2027 contest for a second year in protest of Israel's presence amid the situation in Gaza and a perceived lack of clear rules for excluding countries involved in military conflicts. The broadcaster's withdrawal from the contest in Burgas, Bulgaria, does not necessarily preclude overall Dutch participation in Eurovision 2027. Previously, on August 6, NPO confirmed it would discontinue NPO Soul & Jazz on September 1, 2026, ending nearly two decades of dedicated public jazz and soul programming to save approximately $285,000 annually. Earlier, on July 1, NPO officially phased out the standalone NPO Zapp app, consolidating all children's programming into a dedicated Kids Profile within the NPO Start app.
