GSMA is a privately owned company headquartered in the UK. Founded in 1995, it employs approximately 1000 individuals and functions as a trade association representing the interests of mobile network operators and related companies worldwide.
On July 9, 2026, the GSMA reported that the Republic of the Congo needs an additional $10 million to expand 4G coverage to 97% of its population by 2030, attributing this requirement to market reforms and lower infrastructure costs. Concurrently, the GSMA partnered with Taara to develop a tool, now available through GSMA Intelligence, that allows network planners to compare the total cost of ownership for fibre, wireless radio, and wireless optical solutions across diverse scenarios, addressing the growing demands of AI infrastructure. Earlier, on July 8, the GSMA Open Gateway initiative evolved into a commercial powerhouse, now boasting over 60 channel partners that cover 80% of global mobile connections as of mid-2026. Also on July 8, Dr. Ali Taha Koc, CEO of Turkcell, was appointed Chair of the GSMA Technology Group, an entity representing more than 1000 operators and companies globally.
