International Military Sports Council, also known as CISM, is a privately owned international sports association headquartered in Brussels, Belgium. Established in 1948, the organization operates with approximately 40 employees. Functioning as the world's second-largest multi-discipline sports organization after the International Olympic Committee, CISM specializes in athletics and multi-discipline sports. It holds more than 20 competitions annually, enabling soldiers from its 140 member countries who may previously have met on the battlefield to compete on the sports playing field. CISM organizes various sporting events, including the Military World Games and World Military Championships, for the armed forces of these member countries.
On October 1, 2026, Italy secured multiple gold medals, with Poland and Korea also achieving victories, during the 49th CISM World Military Fencing Championship in Veszprém, Hungary. This third day of competition featured individual Women’s Foil and Men’s Sabre events, along with Men’s Foil and Women’s Épée team events. Previously, on September 29, France, host nation Hungary, Ukraine, and Italy divided honors on Day 2 of the Fencing Championship, with France and Hungary claiming individual titles while Ukraine and Italy won the initial team competitions. The championship commenced on September 28 in Veszprém, marked by Ukrainian dominance and a Polish breakthrough on its opening day, with CISM President Colonel Nilton Rolim and Secretary General Navy Captain Roberto Recchia in attendance. This follows the conclusion of the 50th CISM World Military Modern Pentathlon Championship on September 26 in Caldas da Rainha, Portugal, where Anna Jurt and Oleh Rybak were crowned champions after the Women’s and Men’s Finals. The Modern Pentathlon Championship had officially opened on September 24 in Portugal, bringing together military pentathletes from 13 nations and seeing Türkiye claim the Mixed Relay gold.
