Naughty Dog, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Sony Interactive Entertainment, is a video game developer headquartered in Santa Monica, CA. Founded in 1984, the studio employs approximately 840 individuals. The company specializes in the development of computer games, and is currently developing The Last of Us Part II.
Naughty Dog's scrapped "The Last of Us Online" project was not a side project, significantly contributing to the studio's six-year absence of a new game, with the majority of the *Intergalactic* team reportedly having come from the multiplayer title, according to an August 19 report. Earlier the same day, another report indicated the canceled "The Last of Us Online" project cost "hundreds of millions" before its cancellation, part of PlayStation's broader live service initiative. On August 18, former Naughty Dog game designer Benson Russell, who worked on *Uncharted 1-3* and *The Last of Us*, revealed that dynamic difficulty in the first *Uncharted* game was implemented to artificially extend its length, a decision made after the studio rewrote its technology from scratch during the transition from PS2 to PS3 development. Speaking on August 13, Russell also expressed his belief that an *Uncharted: Drake's Fortune* remake "makes no sense" and suggested the studio should focus on new titles, as Naughty Dog continues developing its new IP, *Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet*. Reports on July 29 claimed the studio plans to release *Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet* next year, a project announced in December 2024 and in development since 2020.
