Atari is a privately owned American multi-platform, global interactive entertainment and licensing company. Founded in 1972, Atari is known as the original innovator of video gaming. The company owns and/or manages a portfolio of over 200 games and franchises, including renowned brands such as Asteroids, Centipede, Missile Command, Pong, Test Drive, Backyard Sports, Ghostbusters, and Rollercoaster Tycoon. Atari capitalizes on these properties by offering games online, on smartphones, tablets, and other connected devices. It also develops and distributes interactive entertainment for video game consoles from Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony. As a licensor, Atari extends its brand and franchises into other media, merchandising, and publishing categories. In 2018, Atari re-entered the hardware business with the launch of the Atari VCS, its first new game system in several years.
