Dunedin city councillor Benedict Ong's bid to secure a director position on the New Zealand Media & Entertainment (NZME) board failed on April 25, 2026, falling 98% short of the required votes. This followed the company's annual shareholders' meeting on April 22, where chairperson Steven Joyce warned that global volatility, stemming in part from the conflict in the Middle East, could create uncertainty for NZME's outlook for the balance of the year. During the same meeting, a shareholder questioned the board regarding CEO Michael Boggs' compensation, noting he has received $15.58 million from the company since 2016, and sought clarity on succession plans. Earlier on April 22, Joyce also disclosed that an independent review of employment practices, initiated after the dismissal of three executive staff, indicated management has more work to do to promote and maintain a supportive work environment.
