Rovio Entertainment Corporation, also known as Rovio Entertainment Oyj, is a publicly owned company headquartered in Finland. Founded in 2003, the company employs approximately 570 individuals and functions as a tier 2 media tech buyer. It reported $351.6M in revenue as of 2023. The company specializes in computer games, creating, developing, and publishing mobile-first games.
Rovio Entertainment will close its Copenhagen studio, discontinuing all operations in Denmark following a redundancy process and the cancellation of the mobile game *Sonic Blitz*. A company representative confirmed the closure to Mobilegamer portal on August 26, noting the studio's development of *Sonic Blitz*. This decision followed the August 21 announcement that *Sonic Blitz 2.0*, a previously rebooted runner-CCG hybrid, was canceled and would end service on August 24, 2026. Earlier in the month, on August 11, Rovio contributed $46.9 million to parent company Sega Sammy's Q1 sales, a slight increase from $45 million a year earlier, performing in line with expectations. Free-to-play sales across Sega's wider Consumer sub-segment, which includes Rovio’s mobile titles, rose to $81.8 million from $72.9 million, though Sega Sammy stated these results fell slightly short of expectations. Previously, on August 4, Sega appointed Black White Orange (BWO) as the official licensing agent for Angry Birds in India, aiming to expand consumer products and brand partnerships for the franchise.
