StarTimes Media, also known as StarSat, is a privately owned company headquartered in South Africa. Functioning as a tier 2 media tech buyer, the company reported $2.8M in revenue as of 2023. Founded in 1988 and operating with approximately 60 employees, StarTimes Media is a pan-African direct broadcast satellite service. It is a subsidiary of StarTimes, specifically StarTimes Communications Network Technologies Co.,LTD, a Beijing-based multinational company that launched its services in Africa in 2008. The company provides media and TV channels and services to 30 countries in Sub-Saharan Africa.
OnDigital Media, the license holder for StarSat, ceased operations following its recent liquidation. This occurred months after the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa (ICASA) conducted a raid on StarSat's Midrand headquarters in October 2024, disconnecting its broadcast signals due to a lapsed broadcasting license. StarSat, a satellite pay-TV broadcaster, subsequently ended operations.
