Turkcell Türkiye, a privately owned telecommunications company founded in 1994 and headquartered in Turkey, is the leading mobile phone operator in the country. Operating as a subsidiary of Turkcell Group, it employs approximately 13,000 people and generated over $1 billion in revenue in 2023. Its primary business is providing mobile telecommunications services within Turkey.
Turkcell signed a loan agreement worth 1.23 billion RMB with the China Development Bank on March 28. This agreement represents the second tranche of a loan. Separately, Turkcell collaborated with Lynk Global to test direct-to-device (D2D) satellite technology in a rural area near Konya, Turkey. This testing utilized Turkcell's mobile frequencies and Lynk's satellites to facilitate SMS exchanges and voice calls using commercial cell phones. The D2D technology aims to provide ubiquitous geographical coverage, including rural areas, and serve as a backup to ensure service resilience and always-on connectivity. The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Uraloğlu, noted that 4.5G technology has been in service in Turkey for 4.5 years, with the country's digital mobile services beginning with 1G in 1994.
