United States Hockey League, also known as USHL, is a privately owned entity headquartered in the United States. Founded in 1947 and operating with approximately 40 employees, the organization focuses on hockey, functioning as the top junior ice hockey league sanctioned by USA Hockey.
The Trenton Golden Hawks provided an update on July 21, 2026, regarding their owner Shawn Hicks' partnership with Hockey Hall of Famer Joe Sakic to co-own a new United States Hockey League franchise. This followed the league's earlier confirmation on June 25 that Hicks and Sakic had acquired a new team, with USHL President and Commissioner Glenn Hefferan expressing enthusiasm for the interest from potential owners in the league's West Coast expansion. The USHL had initially announced its plans on June 4 to add Tier 1 junior teams in California, Nevada, and Arizona, having a memorandum of understanding with stakeholders for this regional expansion. Previously, on May 7, the USHL, National Hockey League (NHL), and USA Hockey expanded their collaboration to support the Tier I junior hockey development pathway in the United States. The league also introduced its Standard Player Development Agreement (SPDA) on March 31, designed to strengthen its player-first approach and enhance support for athletes pursuing NCAA Division I and NHL opportunities.
