United States Hockey League, also known as USHL, is a privately owned entity headquartered in the United States. Founded in 1947 and operating with approximately 40 employees, the organization focuses on hockey, functioning as the top junior ice hockey league sanctioned by USA Hockey.
On July 21, 2026, the Trenton Golden Hawks provided an update to fans regarding a high-profile partnership for a new United States Hockey League (USHL) franchise, co-owned by Golden Hawks owner Shawn Hicks and Hockey Hall of Famer Joe Sakic. Previously, on June 25, USHL President and Commissioner Glenn Hefferan expressed significant interest from potential owners following the league's plans to expand to the West Coast. This followed the USHL's announcement on June 4 of its expansion plans to add Tier 1 Junior teams in California, Nevada, and Arizona, based on a memorandum of understanding with a group of stakeholders. Earlier, on May 7, the National Hockey League (NHL), USA Hockey, and the USHL announced an expanded collaboration to support the continued advancement of the Tier I junior hockey development pathway in the United States. The league had previously adopted its Standard Player Development Agreement (SPDA) on March 31, enhancing the framework that supports athletes pursuing NCAA Division I hockey and NHL opportunities.
