Welsh Rugby Union, also known as WRU, a privately owned organization headquartered in the UK, founded in 1881, operates with approximately 420 employees and reported $139.9M in revenue as of 2025. Functioning as the governing body for contact sports, specifically Rugby in Wales, it oversees the national sport of Wales.
On February 20, 2026, the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) faced a claim from Swansea Council over a proposed takeover of Cardiff Rugby. Previously, on February 19, the WRU announced it would not conclude the takeover deal for Cardiff Rugby until after the Six Nations championship. This followed Swansea Council's ongoing efforts to persuade the union to abandon plans to reduce the number of rugby regions from four to three, a move the council believes could lead to the demise of the Ospreys. Earlier, on February 18, Swansea Council’s call for the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) to investigate the sale of Cardiff Rugby and the future of the Ospreys had not yet become an active case. The council had urged the CMA to investigate the proposed takeover, citing concerns it could result in the loss of professional men’s rugby in Swansea. Separately, on February 13, the WRU projected a potential £1 million loss due to over 15,000 unsold tickets for the Six Nations match between Wales and France, the team’s first home fixture of the championship.
