On July 17, 20th Century Studios tapped Julius Avery, known for directing "The Pope's Exorcist," to helm its new "real-time" horror project "Crush." Avery had signed on July 16 to direct the snake-themed survival thriller, a project the studio acquired last year after an intense bidding war, with John Fischer, Executive Vice President of Development and Production at Temple Hill Entertainment, writing the screenplay. Previously, on July 12, Takashi Yamazaki, the Oscar-winning director of "Godzilla Minus One," partnered with Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions to develop the sci-fi thriller "Nue" at 20th Century Studios. This followed news from July 7 that Yamazaki was setting the project with the studio, building on his success with "Godzilla Minus One," which won an Oscar for Best Visual Effects.
