Coupang, a publicly owned company headquartered in Seattle, Washington, was founded in 2010. It maintains an approximate workforce of 5,070 employees and reported $34.5 billion in revenue as of 2025. Often referred to as "the Amazon of South Korea," the company is primarily engaged in software development to underpin its extensive e-commerce operations, which include online retail, food delivery via Coupang Eats, and video streaming through Coupang Play. A key service is its "Rocket Delivery," offering same-day or next-day delivery. While headquartered in Seattle, Washington, Coupang's primary operations are centered in South Korea and Taiwan, with additional offices in other countries.
Coupang on April 24, 2026, denied reports claiming it pressured the South Korean government through lobbying in the U.S. administration and Congress, calling them "not true" and "clearly groundless." The e-commerce firm also rejected claims that discussions involving security issues or pending South Korea-U.S. diplomatic and security issues took place. Earlier the same day, South Korea's national security adviser, Wi Sung-lac, acknowledged that security consultations with the U.S. were being affected by a dispute related to Coupang Inc., but he maintained that the U.S. alliance was not in crisis despite recent friction and called for alliance issues to be handled independently from legal matters. This followed the conclusion of talks between Coupang investors and Seoul without a deal, potentially opening a path to arbitration in a regulatory dispute over the legal status of Coupang founder Bom Kim. Earlier on April 24, Wi Sung-lac had stated that controversy surrounding South Korea’s investigation into Coupang over a data breach was impacting security consultations with the United States.
