Doordarshan, also known as DD, is a state-owned public television broadcaster headquartered in India and a division of Prasar Bharati. Founded in 1959, the company operates with approximately 5960 employees and reported $333.9M in revenue as of 2023. Functioning as a tier 1 media tech buyer, Doordarshan specializes in broadcast television and radio, leveraging its extensive studio and transmitter infrastructure to deliver television, radio, online, and mobile services across metropolitan and regional India, and internationally. It also broadcasts via digital terrestrial transmitters.
Doordarshan's infrastructure is undergoing significant upgrades, with the government announcing on March 26, 2026, that it sanctioned 68 transmitters under the Broadcasting Infrastructure and Network Development (BIND) scheme. This initiative aims to expand All India Radio (AIR) coverage from 70% in 2021 to 81%, representing a Central Sector Scheme for the modernization of Doordarshan and Akashvani. Previously, on March 24, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) outlined its target of 81% AIR coverage as part of the broader Rs 2539.61 crore BIND scheme, designed to modernize and upgrade Prasar Bharati's infrastructure. Earlier, on March 22, the MIB introduced television sets equipped with in-built satellite tuners and an advanced electronic program guide (EPG) to simplify access to DD Free Dish. This follows modernization efforts highlighted on March 10, which include making 28 regional Doordarshan channels HD program production capable and expanding FM coverage to over 80% of the population in Jharkhand under the BIND scheme. Prasar Bharati also plans to distribute over 8 lakh DD DTH Receiver sets in remote, tribal, Left Wing Extremism (LWE), and border areas.
