Doordarshan celebrated its 66th foundation day on September 15, 2023. A special cultural event, “Shabdanjali: DD@66,” marked the occasion at Rang Bhawan Akashvani Bhawan in New Delhi. Doordarshan began as an experimental television service under All India Radio on September 15, 1959, with its first broadcast inaugurated by then-President Rajendra Prasad. Until 1975, Doordarshan remained part of All India Radio. Prasar Bharati CEO Gaurav Dwivedi attributed Doordarshan's longevity to its connection with the people during the foundation day celebrations. The Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Sanjay Jaju, noted that the Waves OTT platform includes Doordarshan's live programs and Akashvani magazines.
