Optus Sport, a privately owned company headquartered in Australia and a subsidiary of Optus, was founded in 2016, employs approximately 100 individuals, and reported $44.5M in revenue as of 2023, functioning as a tier 1 media tech buyer. The company offers a group of Australian sports channels, accessible via Optus' Yes TV by Fetch IPTV platform, through an Optus Decoder on the VAST Satellite Network, as well as through its companion applications and the Optus Sport website.
Optus Sport ceased operations on August 1, 2025, concluding almost a decade of broadcasting football in Australia. This followed the sale of key football rights, including the Premier League, Emirates FA Cup, J.League, and National Women’s Soccer League, to Stan Sport. Nine Entertainment Co, through its subsidiary Stan, acquired selected Optus Sport assets, such as media rights agreements, subscriber agreements, and social media assets. These assets included the Premier League and Emirates FA Cup rights. Following the closure of Optus Sport, Howard Rees, previously its head, joined Nine Entertainment’s Streaming and Broadcast leadership team as chief strategy officer. Rees' appointment was announced by Amanda Laing in an email to staff earlier this week and confirmed by Rees on LinkedIn on Wednesday evening.
