British Forces Broadcasting Service, also known as BFBS, is a privately owned entity headquartered in the UK, founded in 1982 with an estimated 100 employees, and reported $32.2M in revenue as of 2023. Functioning as a tier 1 media tech buyer, the company specializes in providing radio and television programmes for His Majesty's Armed Forces and their dependents worldwide. Editorial control is independent of the Ministry of Defence and the armed forces themselves. It was established by the British War Office (now the Ministry of Defence) in 1943 and was managed by Gale Pedrick in 1944.
On April 23, 2026, British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS) signed a new 10-year contract with the Ministry of Defence, agreeing to provide media and entertainment services, including trusted news, entertainment, and sport, to UK Armed Forces personnel and their families worldwide, encompassing those deployed overseas and in remote operational environments. Previously, on January 13, 2026, BFBS joined the BBC and The Sportsman as an official broadcast partner for the Betfred Challenge Cup, delivering live coverage of first-round matches involving UK Armed Forces teams to service personnel globally. In November 2025, BFBS Sitrep secured the Best News Coverage (Audio) award at the 2025 Association for International Broadcasting (AIB) Awards, triumphing over competitors like BBC World Service, Bloomberg, and Times Radio. Earlier in November 2025, BFBS signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Australian company APC Technology Pty Ltd to deliver broadcast media and welfare technology solutions across the Defence and mining sectors throughout Australasia and the wider Asia-Pacific region. This followed BFBS hosting and livestreaming the Grand Final of the inaugural BFBS Pro League at the University of Staffordshire on September 29, 2025.
