News Summary:

A parliamentary working group concluded its efforts on February 25, 2026, proposing significant changes to the governance, oversight, and funding of Lithuanian National Radio and Television (LRT). This initiative follows a previous attempt in December to amend the LRT law to facilitate the dismissal of the public broadcaster’s director, an effort blocked by opposition lawmakers and public protests. Earlier, on January 22, 2026, the European Parliament passed a resolution supporting LRT, with 385 MEPs voting in favor, 165 against, and 35 abstaining. The resolution criticized attempts to change the procedure for dismissing the director and the Lithuanian Seimas' decision to freeze LRT's budget for three years. Previously, on December 30, 2025, LRT, citing the country's Ministry of Defense, reported that Lithuania planned to mine bridges and roads on its borders with Russia and Belarus as part of creating the Baltic Defense Line. On December 7, 2025, LRT also reported experts' concerns that climate changes could lead to a decline in spruce trees in Lithuania, potentially making them a rare sight.
