RTBF, also known as Belgian Radio-television of the French Community and Radio-télévision belge de la Communauté française, is a state-owned entity headquartered in Belgium. Founded in 1953, the company employs approximately 2,410 individuals and reported $523.0M in revenue as of 2024. As a tier 1 media tech buyer, the company specializes in broadcast television and radio, functioning as a public service broadcaster for the French-speaking Community of Belgium. Its operations are complemented by counterparts VRT, which serves the Flemish Community, and BRF, which serves the German-speaking Community.
Concerns about political interference at RTBF emerged on January 30, 2026, following comments by Media Minister Jacqueline Galant regarding a future "different line" for the public broadcaster, remarks that precede the 2026 renewal of RTBF's general manager and information director. Previously, on January 28, the RTBF editorial team confirmed that the highway vignette remained a subject of negotiation, responding to a viewer's query about its potential budget contributions. Earlier the same day, the "Environmental Information Barometer in Belgium," a public tool initiated by the CSA, launched to combat misinformation and to analyze the treatment of environmental and climate issues across Belgian media. On January 27, RTBF experienced a major technical failure impacting several public media services, which resulted in the 1:00 PM news broadcasting in a "degraded mode" and disruptions to other scheduled programs. This followed the selection of marimbist Simon Nakhimovitch on January 26 to represent Belgium at the Eurovision for Young Classical Musicians, chosen by a jury at the national final held at Studio 1 in Flagey.
