Rugby Australia is a privately owned national governing body for rugby union in Australia, established in 1949. It represents all levels of the sport across the country's eight member union states and territories. The organization, incorporated as a company in 1985, is a member of World Rugby (formerly the International Rugby Board). As of 2023, Rugby Australia employs approximately 280 people, and its annual revenue is less than $100 million. Its headquarters are located in Australia.
Rugby Australia announced that Matt Philip will return to Australia from Japan in July 2024 to play for the NSW Waratahs. Separately, Lachlan Lonergan re-signed with Rugby Australia for two years, committing to Australian Rugby until at least the 2027 Rugby World Cup. Following Joe Schmidt's resignation after the Rugby Championship, Rugby Australia continues to search for a replacement. Concerns were raised regarding the potential double-booking of Les Kiss as both Wallabies and Queensland Reds coach. Finally, Newcastle will host the Australian Rugby Shield in October 2025.
