South African Rugby Union, also known as SA Rugby, is a privately owned entity headquartered in South Africa. Founded in 1992, it operates with approximately 210 employees. The organization functions as a tier 1 media tech buyer, specializing in spectator sports as the governing body for rugby in South Africa. SA Rugby is structured as a federation of 14 independent rugby unions.
On February 27, 2026, Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein achieved Class B – Tier 2 Test status, restoring its capability to host top-tier international rugby matches after collaboration among rugby authorities, the Mangaung Municipality, and the provincial government. Previously, on January 29, 2026, a noticeable unease emerged among fans regarding the announcement that the fourth Test between the Springboks and All Blacks would take place in the United States. This follows the South African Rugby Union's announcement on December 5, 2025, that national team coach Rassie Erasmus extended his tenure until 2031. Under the new agreement, Erasmus will lead the team through the 2027 World Cup in Australia and the 2031 tournament in the United States. He previously served as coach for the 2019 World Cup win and as head of strengthening for the 2023 World Cup victory, contributing to the team's two consecutive World Cup titles. Earlier, on November 16, 2025, Coach Erasmus added a double World Cup winner and a rising international prop to the Springbok squad as they prepared for the final two clashes of their Outgoing Tour against Ireland and Wales.
