Youku Tudou, a privately-owned Chinese video hosting service (branded Youku), was founded in 2003. The platform features both user-generated and professionally produced content. Initially a publicly traded company listed on the New York Stock Exchange (2010), Youku merged with competitor Tudou in 2012. In 2015, Alibaba Group acquired the combined entity, resulting in its delisting. As of 2020, Youku Tudou employed approximately 2200 people, generated over $1 billion in revenue, and maintains its headquarters in China.
On August 11, 2025, Access Advance LLC announced that Alibaba Group and ZTE Corporation joined the Video Distribution Patent (VDP) Pool as licensors, and that Youku, a subsidiary of Alibaba Group, joined as a licensee. The announcement was repeated on August 12, 2025. These events occurred amidst a recent increase in Alibaba Group's stock price, attributed to optimism surrounding Chinese equities.
