The International Handball Federation (IHF), a privately owned organization founded in 1946 and headquartered in Switzerland, employs approximately 90 people. Its primary activity is the governance and administration of handball and beach handball worldwide. This includes organizing major international competitions such as the men's and women's world championships, the former established in 1938 and the latter in 1957. As of 2023, the IHF continues to oversee these and other handball events.

This will be Croatia's first time hosting the championships. On August 6, 2024, Kuwait lost to Sweden 22-39 in the IHF Men's U19 Handball World Championship in Egypt. The IHF announced the preliminary round groups for the 27th IHF Women’s World Championship. The IHF also announced the signing of a purchase agreement for a new headquarters in Switzerland. Finally, the IHF reported that 51 coaches recently obtained their IHF D Licence after completing courses in Algeria and Colombia.
