Osterreichischer Rundfunk, also known as the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation (ORF), is a state-owned entity headquartered in Austria. The organization, a tier 1 media tech buyer, was founded in 1955, employs approximately 1,060 individuals, and reported $1.2B in revenue as of 2024. Functioning as the national public broadcaster of Austria, ORF specializes in broadcast television and radio. It is funded from a combination of television licence fee revenue and limited on-air advertising, establishing itself as a dominant player in the Austrian broadcast media. Historically, Austria was the last country in continental Europe after Albania to allow nationwide private television broadcasting, despite commercial TV channels from neighboring Germany being present in Austria on pay-TV and via terrestrial overspill since the 1980s.
On August 21, 2026, service provider Big Blue Marble leveraged Net Insight's Nimbra platform to establish long-distance media networking, supporting ST 2110 video and audio workflows across Österreichischer Rundfunk (ORF)'s new full-IP network. This announcement followed ORF's completion of its transition to an IP-based media transport network, partnering with Big Blue Marble (formerly ORS Group) and utilizing Net Insight's Nimbra platform. Earlier, on August 19, the Austrian public broadcaster confirmed it was replacing its legacy SDI contribution infrastructure with this new nationwide IP-based media network. The deployment, ordered in the second quarter of 2025 and executed by Big Blue Marble with local partner TV-Connect, links ORF’s headquarters and a second production facility in Vienna to nine regional production studios, one in each of Austria’s federal states. ORF operates as Austria’s largest media provider, managing four national television channels, 12 radio channels, and various websites.
